What would you do if you had one opportunity to make a lasting impression of Palm Springs’ LGBT Pride on the world stage?

A float of rainbow-colored, papier-mache palm trees? Paraders in T-shirts bearing “Gay Palm Springs” and a mountain-scape? Or perhaps something more adventurous.

That’s Ron deHarte’s challenge this weekend at WorldPride in the United Kingdom.

A desert city contingent is scheduled to be one of two U.S. entries July 7 in the international parade, according to deHarte, president of Greater Palm Springs Pride.

The Palm Springs “parade contingent has been assigned to the first section of the parade,” he says in an email.

deHarte also is in London to attend various WorldPride festival events including a gala attended by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He hopes California expats living in London will join him for the celebration.

More than 1 million people are expected to visit London for the festivities.

Hosted by London Pride, WorldPride (www.interpride.com) began June 23 and concludes July 8. It follows The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, an extravaganza honoring Queen Elizabeth’s 60th anniversary as monarch, which took place in early June in London.

However, the capital city’s summer as a party destination doesn’t end with Pride.

The 2012 Summer Olympics (www.london2012.com) are scheduled to take place there July 27 through Aug. 12.
