Air hostess Pam Ann lands in Palm Desert

Caroline Reid as Pam Ann. Submitted photo

Sometimes as a journalist I get to interview people who make a lasting impression. I recently spoke with air hostess Pam Ann, the alter-ego of Australian comedian Caroline Reid, who’s appearing May 10 in “Cockpit!” at the McCallum in Palm Desert.

During our brief chat she was charming, funny, salty, smart, irreverent and, in her own words, “super geeky passionate.”

Here’s an excerpt:

How did the Pam Ann character come about?

PAM ANN: Through desperation of getting off the island of Australia. I had to come up with something to get off there and get to civilization. I wanted to do acting and I was really inspired by Sandra Bernhard. But I was awful at auditions and I could never get anything in the acting world. I thought the only way to get something was to do something myself.

I dressed up as this Pan American air hostess for a party. After a few drinks everyone kept saying “Pam Ann, Pam Ann, Pam Ann.”  I woke up and I thought … I’ve never really travelled either. I was always inspired by that era — like Palm Springs. To me, I love it because it has that ’60s chic-ness to it and the design. I just love that. Pam Ann is a throwback to the ’60s.

I was always told the show was style over substance. I thought it was a good thing. I was more excited about doing the posters and the outfits than the show.

What did you think when celebrities such as Cher, Elton John and Madonna made it known they were fans of yours?

It stopped though. I need a new one to add to the collection. Why didn’t Lady Gaga say something recently?

I’m from the suburbs of Australia. When I did the Cher tour — her manager is Australian — I rang my mom. She said, “Cher? What, the tribute act?” “No,” I said, “Cher Cher.”

All of it is always a shock to me. I still think about the Cher thing and think, Did that happen? I grew up with “The Sonny and Cher Show” in Australia.

Who makes you laugh harder than anyone?

You know what, my favorite comedian is Joan Rivers, of course. She’s continuously pushing the boundaries. I love her because she winds up those stupid *#@& who need it. Everyone is so offended today. Some people need to be shaken like a child. I like Joan Rivers.

I like Louis C.K. I think he’s great because he couldn’t give a #%*& and he says that to people. Justin Vivian Bond, I find ingeniously funny. I always have. He’s been a friend of mind for years. I find his whole reality amazing. He’s just one of the best storytellers and comics in the world today.

I went on a date yesterday with this guy and we had foie gras. He didn’t know what foie gras was. I said, “Foie gras is like the goose liver.” We’re walking toward the lake and there’s a goose. He pointed and said, “Look there’s an organ donor.” He wasn’t even trying to be funny. It was genius.

Is there anything more you want people to know about you?

Here’s a good quote: “I’d rather cry in a Rolls than be happy on a bike.” Patrizia Gucci said that in the back of a car on her way to prison after killing her husband.

Cyndi Lauper follows ‘Kinky Boots’ with Palm Springs performance

Cyndi Lauper. Submitted photo

Cyndi Lauper will do something May 11 that she’s never done before in her 30-year career. She will perform during the AIDS Assistance Program’s annual Evening Under the Stars in Palm Springs (see details below).

But that’s just one of her career-firsts this year. In early April, “Kinky Boots,” the only musical she’s written the music and lyrics for, opened on Broadway. Lauper adapted the show from screen to stage with theater veteran Harvey Fierstein. It received 13 Tony Award nominations on April 30.

Lauper — who won legions of fans with “Time After Time,” “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “True Colors” and an iPod full of other pop tunes — recently shared her opening night experience on Broadway with Desert Outlook.

“I was really nervous — knowing that the show was finally opened and all the reviewers were there too. We had the most amazing audiences in previews, so we felt the crowd would be with us, but knowing there was press in the house that night added to my anxiety. We have all been working on the musical for almost four years. So it was exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time.

“Everyone on and off stage that is part of Kinky Boots brought their A game to this project,” Lauper continues. “Everyone from the producers to the cast to the musicians. It was an amazing creative process to be part of. We are all a family now and when you come to the show, you feel that and (are) affected by it.

“It’s a great story about how acceptance for yourself and others can change the world. … Then, reviews (which I never read my own reviews, good or bad, as I find them distracting) for ‘Kinky Boots,’ which is so important to the health of a musical, were all really good. So I was overjoyed.”

Lauper reveals more about the show, her crazy-busy life, and what she thinks about the progress of gay rights in the new issue of Desert Outlook, out May 9.

Karmin brings the heat to The Dinah

Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan of Karmin. Submitted photo

Do you feel it: the buzz, the energy of women who are primed to party arriving in Palm Springs?

The Dinah, a celebrated annual lesbian party and music festival, is under way. Thousands of women have converged in the desert from across the U.S. and beyond for poolside fun and games, comedy and musical performances by Havana Brown, Diana King, Katy Tiz, Karmin and more.

The pop duo Karmin, whose single “Hello” is getting play on the radio and video shows, is slated to perform Saturday night at the Palm Springs Convention Center (details at TheDinah.com). Performers Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan recently chatted with Desert Outlook about  their LGBT fans, covering rap songs, and visiting Palm Springs. Here’s a sneak peek:

How did you choose the songs you covered?

Nick Noonan: We looked at the charts, what people were talking about, what was new, and if we could “Karminize” it.

Are you planning to do more covers?

Amy Heidemann: It’s been so focused on the new music. We’re sort of full speed ahead with the new album that’s coming out later in the year.

Tell us about the new album.

Noonan: There’s a lot more me on it, a lot of me singing, a lot of live instruments, a lot more organic indie-sounding songs.

What advice do you have for unknown artists who want to break into the music business through social media, as you did?

Heidemann: Whatever you do make sure it’s something that you’re super passionate about. You have to put in more work than you can possibly imagine. Make sure you have those really deep roots with your audience, keep putting stuff out on a consistent basis, and listen to your audience.

Did either of you ever audition for “American Idol” or any other music competition show?
Noonan: It’s actually really funny. The same week we uploaded the “Look At Me Now” cover we were planning to go that day to audition for “The X Factor. “ We didn’t make it; the video went viral.

Early on there was some confusion about your group name, with some fans thinking Karmin was Amy’s name. What were some of the other group names you considered?

Noonan: We considered a bunch, man, trying to find something that meant something. Carmen in Latin meant song. We added karma to it.

Read the full Karmin interview and features on the re-emergence of artist Alex Koleszar, the history of The Racquet Club, and Palm Springs’ “green gays” in the April issue of Desert Outlook.

Carly Rae Jepsen stands up, performs for LGBT fans

Carly Rae Jepsen

Carly Rae Jepsen is well on her way to earning an LGBT merit badge.

A week after the singer announced she will not perform at the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree, it was announced today that she will perform as the headliner at the White Party T-dance in Palm Springs. Jepsen cancelled her Boy Scouts appearance because of the organization’s anti-gay stance.

The Canadian singer gained many LGBT fans with her big hit last year, “Call Me Maybe,” which had a surprising gay twist in its video. Her other songs include “Good Time,” a duet with Owl City, and the single out now, “Tonight I’m Getting Over  You.”

The T-dance will take place at 3 p.m. March 31 at “White Party Park” in Palm Springs. For admission price and information on other White Party events, go to www.jeffreysanker.com

Palm Springs residents set to debut on Canadian TV

Robert Julian co-stars in "Golden Gays." Submitted photo

What happens in Warm Sands doesn’t always stay in the Palm Springs neighborhood.

Four senior gay men and two lesbians who call the desert hot spot home will provide a peek inside their lives this month when the docu-soap “Golden Gays” begins airing. The first episode of the reality TV show is set to hit Canadian airwaves at 10 p.m. March 22 on the Slice network, according to star Robert Julian.

Two episodes will be broadcast back-to-back each Friday until the season is finished.

The series is produced by Cream Productions of Toronto, Canada. When filming began in Palm Springs last year, producers planned to shop the series to an American distribution company. There’s no word yet whether, or when, the American audience will be able to see the show.

Robert Julian is an author and journalist who lives in Palm Springs and regularly contributes to Desert Outlook magazine.

New Desert Outlook: Sports world stepping up to the plate for LGBT athletes

Scott Norton. Submitted photo

“It’s funny how they worry about getting peeked at in the locker room. I don’t even see it like that. I see it as, basically, family and I don’t have that kind of feeling toward family. Just because we’re gay doesn’t mean every single man that gets naked in front of us produces a reaction. We’re just like you, trying to become our best.”

Openly gay bowling champion Scott Norton discusses misconceptions about LGBT athletes in the March issue of Desert Outlook, on stands March 7.

Chippendales star lands White Party gig

Jaymes Vaughan

What would the White Party be without a diva or two to rock the stage and the sexy glam looks attendees expect? A few of our favorite ladies will perform later this month in Palm Springs: Carmen Electra, Alexis Jordan, Ana Matronic of Scissor Sisters, and Adriana DeMoura of “The Real Housewives of Miami.”

Event promoter Jeffrey Sanker is also mixing things up a bit. In addition to the women and the hottest DJs expected to perform March 29-31, he’s added a new position to the lineup – White Party Ambassador. This year’s circuit party statesman is 30-year-old Jaymes Vaughan, Chippendales performer and former “Amazing Race” contestant.

Vaughan, who’s never visited Palm Springs before, recently spoke with Desert Outlook about how he got the gig, how reality TV changed his life, and his inspirational dad.

How did you get the White Party ambassador title?
Well I bumped into Jeffrey Sanker. He was in Vegas; it was the first time I met him. He said, “Hey, you’re that guy from “Amazing Race.” I said “yeah” and then we started talking. I told him about all the things I’d like to do. Jeffrey said he’d like to give me a platform to do it, and it just went from there.

What are your duties as the White Party ambassador?
I ain’t got a clue. I’ve never been to White Party. I will tell you I will be at all the parties.

What are you looking forward to doing in Palm Springs?
First of all, I’m really excited about getting to go to this big thing that everybody talks about every year. I get to go with Jeffrey, VIP style. That’s kind of cool.

It’s a really cool music weekend. Being a singer and that being my background, music is the thing I’m most excited about. You can’t have a party without music.

What’s the best memory of your “Amazing Race” experience that viewers didn’t get to see?
The thing about “Amazing Race” is everything they show on camera is what really happens. The coolest thing for me is that we got to stay in the whole game. We got to do the entire thing.

One of the things you really didn’t get to see is the experience you get to have in some of these poorer countries. We got to see how these people live with so much less than we have in the United States. To see that and be in a race for $1 million dollars is to realize how trivial what we were doing was. We got to see how happy these people were, though they didn’t have cell phones and TVs. It was really a beautiful thing to see.

How has finishing second with your friend James Davis affected your life?
Finishing second was a little devastating. It wasn’t how we planned to finish. But us not winning was good because we’ve gotten so many opportunities. James (who’s straight) and I have been the grand marshals for numerous Pride events. We get to do a lot of cool stuff from it. … I always joke because I feel like a Kardashian. We didn’t do anything. We went around the world and lost. It’s awesome.

What did you think of the film “Magic Mike” – was it realistic?

It was cool in the way that it brought a lot of interest to our show, back to Chippendales. But it’s not what our show is. That was very much like a strip club. Our show is a multimillion-dollar show. It definitely confused some people who thought they would come to our show and have their dollar bills ready.

What are you working on career-wise?
James (Davis) and I are working on our own television show that’s hopefully going to be on in the fall. It’s a travel show being looked at by networks, but it’s doing it how we do things.

I read that you’ve been active in raising awareness about cancer because of your dad. Any plans to continue that?
Absolutely. You know I think this is what I’m supposed to be doing. You hear about cancer all the time. I just heard it but it didn’t affect me. Now it’s close to home. That’s why we went on the race to win the million dollars. My dad’s medical expenses are insane.

I have the best, best friend in the world. James went with me without hesitation. When we didn’t win it was obviously devastating for us more than anyone else. We weren’t going to win for us.

But these appearances we’re getting booked on are amazing. We’re able to take that money and give it to my dad. And we started this website, www.forgetcancernow.com, and people from all over the world just started donating money to my dad. It was the most moving, amazing, inspiring thing I’ve ever seen happen in my entire life. We’ve raised $30,000 for my dad now, and we’re not done. We did win two cars on the show and we’re selling those to help as well. It’s given us an opportunity to spread this message.

In the end I want to create something that does help people in this situation – like my dad who is past retirement age and a military veteran. I’m in the process of figuring out how all of that works. I’m meeting with lawyers to learn how to do it right.

How is your dad?
It’s a daily fight. The one thing I got from him is he’s always in a positive spirit and he always looks at the glass half-full. We’re praying for the best.

Jaymes Vaughan is featured in the March issue of Desert Outlook magazine, which hits stands across the Coachella Valley on Thursday, March 7. Desert Sun subscribers can also see it at www.mydesert.com/desertoutlook

‘X Factor’ alum Jason Brock to rock Palm Springs audience at Skylark Hotel

Jason Brock

From the first moment Jason Brock appeared on screen for “The X Factor” auditions, it was endearingly obvious that he was unlike any other contestant.

His glam-goth outfit and jet-black coif, wide smile, and amusingly incessant nervous chatter practically screamed I’m an original! The judges got it as soon as he started belting out a rafters-rocking version of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” They loved the performance and performer.

Brock, a technical support associate from San Francisco, relished the glowing feedback and exclaimed on camera, “I’m going to win.”

Other performances followed. While the judges continued to be impressed by Brock as a singer and a personality, his wardrobe and the songs selected by his coach, LA Reid, got low marks. He was eliminated from the competition in the second week of live shows.

Spurred on by the experience and his love of music, Brock continues to entertain audiences. He will perform Friday in Palm Springs during a party at Skylark Hotel, the newly restored property once known as Camp Palm Springs (see event details below).

Prior to his first visit to the desert city, Brock shares with Desert Outlook what he learned from performing on television, getting grabby with co-host Mario Lopez and pursuing his dream as an openly gay musician.

What did you learn about being a performer from your experience on the show?

I learned that even when you think you’re doing fantastic, some people (Simon Cowell) won’t like it. But I also learned a lot more about how to perform on television — like looking at cameras and staging. I knew nothing about making a TV show like “The X-Factor” before, even though I have had plenty of theater and performance experience.

From your first appearance on the show, you made it known you were gay by mentioning your boyfriend. What was the reaction to your being openly gay?
Well, the Advocate wanted to interview me pretty quickly — that was cool. Many people compared me to Adam Lambert, which I think had to do with being gay in part. But there was never a negative reaction –oh, except on my YouTube videos. People said mean things about my sexuality there all the time — still do probably.
How will you know you’ve made it as “Mr. Entertainment” (nickname on the show)?
Well, I’ll know I’ve made it when I have a Grammy, a Tony, an Emmy and an Oscar. Yes, that’s my goal.
Who is your favorite diva?
Tina Turner, Anita Baker and Patti LaBelle are three of my favorites. It would be hard to say who is best and I idolize many other divas, too.
It was funny when after a performance you asked co-host Mario Lopez if you could pinch his butt. What, if anything, did he say to you about it later?
He said off-stage that he loved it. He is a good sport and nearly a friend. I’ve been a guest on his radio show and he tweets me fairly regularly. Oh, and I met his wife last week and apologized for harassing her husband. She just said “I love it!” And for that I love her — and Mario. They are totally chill people.
What have your former tech support co-workers said about your appearance on the show?
They are so happy for me. Everyone has been cheering me on, and I really appreciate the support. In fact, I have a New Year’s Eve cabaret at 7 p.m. in San Francisco and the CEO of my former employer is coming with his wife.
What will you perform at the Skylark Hotel event?
I’m going to do a couple of songs that I did on the show — including the most famous one I did, “New York State of Mind.” And you must hear my rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” You’ll never forget it.
Aside from performing, what are you looking forward to doing or seeing in Palm Springs?
I’m probably going to see my friend, Tom Orr, who’s doing his show, “Dirty Little Showtunes,” in town. Also, I keep hearing that as soon as I get off the plane that I’m going to feel an almost magical sense of relaxation. I can’t wait. Seriously, every gay guy I talk to tells me that Palm Springs is like their favorite city. So, I can’t wait to fall in love with it, sit by a pool and have a cocktail.

Ronnie Kroell takes on holiday film, politics and Palm Springs getaways

By Reggie Cameron

Actor and model Ronnie Kroell

Openly gay actor and activist Ronnie Kroell emerged from the Bravo reality series “Make Me A Supermodel” as runner-up and “Fan Favorite.” After walking in countless runway presentations, he was featured in a number of magazines including Instinct and Playgirl. He chats with us from his home in Southern California about politics, family, and his latest film which premieres this week in Palm Springs.

“Scrooge & Marley” is described as “A Christmas Carol” gone gay. How do you fit in to the Dickens’ classic?

I portray the Ghost of Christmas Past in the film and Randy the bartender [chuckles].The movie was filmed in Chicago, where I’m from. Years ago, I worked at a place there called Mini Bar on Halstead Street so there’s a bit of a parallel. It was hard work, but I had a great time.

Filming this was a bit of a homecoming for you then?

I grew up in Chicago and the holiday season is my favorite time of year. My family has several traditions. Each year we go to Mayor Daley Plaza together to enjoy the holiday tree and the multicultural market. It’s something we’ve done since I was a little boy. My father would lift me up and put me on his shoulders [laughs]. Recently, my boyfriend joined me for the Chicago red carpet premiere of “Scrooge & Marley.” This year he joined my family for our annual visit to the Christkindlmarket. It was very special.

How sweet. Switching gears a bit, I know you’re very interested in social issues and public policy. What are your thoughts on our recent elections?

I’m really quite thrilled that Barack won a second term. We have high expectations for our public officials and it’s important that we understand that the president is just one person. The beauty, and what has recently been a challenge with our political landscape, was our checks and balances system. Keeping that in mind, I think President Obama did a fantastic job in his first term.

One of the things as we move forward is that we’re going to have to cross party lines to find resolutions to some pretty serious issues we have in this country. When I watched his acceptance speech in my hometown and saw that he included the LGBT community in his speech it sent chills through my spine. This wasn’t an HRC event, this is a platform where he was addressing the nation, and moreover the world and he brought forth a message of inclusion.

It was a powerful moment.

The thing about this for me is that as we seek acceptance from the public at large, the LGBT community at large can and should be more accepting of one another. As we’re moving forward I would hope we work on our other issues, too. I’m not speaking just to the superficiality of ageism, or notes about race and body type, but I have a very good friend who is transgendered and to see the way she has been treated, not by people outside of the LGBT family, but my others has been really disappointing. As a group we should be able to show the world at large that as a community we are able to embrace one another and find peace.

You’ll be joining us in Palm Springs this Thursday for the premiere of “Scrooge & Marley” at Camelot Theatres?

Yes, I love Palm Springs. As you know, I was there to walk in a fashion show with several designers from “Project Runway.” I’ve come out to the desert with friends and for events like the White Party several times. I’m a seasoned traveler to Palm Springs. I love the people there and always have a good time when I get to visit.

If you go

The “egg” phrases were flying Thursday at The LGBT Community Center of the Desert’s food bank in downtown Palm Springs.

Jeff Wolter, owner of the Nesteggg Group, said it was an “egg-cellent” and “egg-citing” occasion — with good reason. His financial and insurance services firm had just committed $100,000 to support the food bank during the next four years. And in return, the facility was renamed the Nesteggg Food Bank at The Center. It’s located at 610 S. Belardo Road.

For nearly three of the five years the food bank has been open, Nesteggg has done its accounting. During that time Wolter became familiar with the food bank and The Center’s other programs, and said he wanted to give back.

Gary Costa, interim executive director at The Center, says the food bank serves about 275 people each week.  Recipients are seniors and others who receive disability benefits. Nesteggg’s contribution will help cover food, staff and overhead expenses, Costa adds.

Wolter was recognized by Costa, The Center Board Chairman Randy Lowe, Palm Springs City Councilman Rick Hutcheson and others Thursday during the unveiling of the new name. It was also an occasion to  acknowledge another “egg-ceptional” contribution.

Earlier this week, Hickman Family Farms out of Arizona donated 900 dozen eggs to the food bank. The company provides eggs to grocery stores and other businesses across the Southwest, including between Arizona and San Diego.

Wolter says it will provide a couple hundred dozen eggs every week.
