“Sisters are doin’ it for themselves … and the rest of us” is how LGBT voters might tweak that line from the hit song recorded in 1985 by Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics.

It was announced today that several well-known and successful lesbians — including actress Jane Lynch, tennis legend Billie Jean King, Chicago Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts and LGBT leader Urvashi Vaid — have established a super PAC.

The goal of the fundraising organization, known as LPAC, is to provide financial backing to federal and state political candidates and ballot measures that are pro-lesbian. A requirement for anyone who might benefit from LPAC is a commitment to end discrimination against LGBTs.

What’s especially interesting about the group is that its support will not be limited by party or gender lines. As long as candidates support issues important to lesbians and equal rights for all Americans, it doesn’t matter if they’re Democrat, Republican, gay, straight, male or female.

The group’s goal is to raise at least $1 million for this year’s elections. So who might benefit from the new super PAC? Though LPAC hasn’t finalized a list of candidates to fund, President Obama seems a likely beneficiary, as Ricketts is known as a top Obama campaign donor.

Following his announcement in May in support of marriage equality, Facebook and other social media sites were flooded with LGBT postings to express thanks to the president and contribute financially to his re-election bid.

The LPAC development comes in the midst of the heated campaign for the Oval Office. As of this week, Republican contender Mitt Romney is raising more funds than Obama. A recent email appeal from Obama’s camp to his supporters says that Romney raised $100 million in June, more than Obama supportes raised in April and May combined.

“If it continues at this pace, it could cost us the election,” the Obama camp says.
