‘Savage Pets,’ Bobby Jo Valentine and cool jazz

Painting by Shawn Savage

For anyone who never quite “got” or grew tired of seeing C.M. Coolidge’s oil paintings of dogs sitting around a card table playing poker, artist Shawn Savage offers an opportunity to see new pet art and support animal charities.

Starting today (Aug. 24), paintings and sculptures from the “Savage Pets” exhibition and art sale will be on display at various Palm Springs venues. Created by Savage, the artworks depict dogs and cats doing what they do best – look adorable while reflecting back all of the love, attention and amusement they receive from their two-legged pals. You won’t see one cigar-smoking, card shark in the bunch.

A launch party is planned for 7 to 9 p.m. today at BluPrint Green Gallery, 386 N. Palm Canyon Drive. The festivities move Aug. 25 to Savage Art Gallery and Boutique, 870 E. Research Drive, where recording artist Bobby Jo Valentine will perform during a silent auction of the artworks. They also take place from 7 to 9 p.m.

Several businesses – The Rainbow Bar and Grill, Swank, Cold Nose Warm Heart, Deko and The Sandwich Spot – also display items in the series. To see the work, go to www.TheSavageGallery.com .

Proceeds from the shows will benefit Coachella Valley animal charities.

Jazz in the Pines

The 19th Annual Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines, which will take place Aug. 25 and 26, gives new meaning to the phrase “cool jazz.”

In addition to its lineup of cool musicians – such as 12-year-old prodigy Ray Goren, Robin Adler, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, Mary Stallings and the Eric Reed Trio, and Chuck Alvarez – the altitude of the festival location guarantees cooler temps than on the valley floor. A high in the low 80s is expected this weekend in Idyllwild, while Palm Springs will see highs in the low 100s, according to Accuweather.

The festival will take place under the pines of the Idyllwild Arts Academy at 52500 Temecula Road, so bring a lawn chair or spread.

Tickets are $65 per day and available both days at the festival gate, which opens at 10 a.m. The concerts begin at 10:30 a.m.

Parking is free in designated lots. For $30, shuttles are available to and from Palm Springs and Palm Desert. Information: www.idyllwildjazz.com or (951) 500-4090.
